Director: Mel Smith
Starring: Rowan Atkinson, Peter MacNicol, John Mills, Pamela Reed, Harris Yulin
Genre: Comedy
Studio: Polygram Filmed Entertainment   Release date: 1997   Rated: PG-13
Language (Country): English, French (UK)
Summary: Bean works as a caretaker at Britain's formidable Royal National Gallery, and his bosses want to fire him because he sleeps at work all the time, but can't because the chairman of the gallery's board defends him. They send him to USA, to the small Los Angeles art gallery instead, where he'll have to officiate at the opening of the greatest US picture ever (called "Whistler's Mother").
My Rating:
My Review: Written (in part) and staring Rowan Atkinson. Bean is a lovable, bumbling character. A moron with amazing luck, endearing charm, and boundless idiocy. When the board of directors (Bean works as a watchman at a London museum) tries to sack this sad-sack, they run afoul of the director, who - for some unknown reason - loves Bean. They do the next best thing they can think of; they send him on an extended business trip to America. He's to help promote the arrival of "Whistler's Mother". It's recently been purchased by an American, and it's coming back to America. With Bean helping, you can be sure that there will be many laughable scenes and scenarios. His close lipped (minimal dialogue) style, uncoordinated mannerisms, and goofy faces, make him a comedy classic. A ninety minute laugh fest. The movie hinges entirely on Bean, as the rest of the plot and actors are merely there to provide a frame for this master of slapstick.

My Rating:
My Review: Directed by Ron Howard. Starring Russel Crowe, Ed Harris and Jennifer Connelly. A remarkable movie. A brilliant but autistic mathematician (played by Russel Crowe) accepts work breaking codes and his life becomes a nightmare as madness overtakes him. The directing, acting, and casting were exceptional. The costumes and makeup were great. Especially the aging effects. This movie was a portrayal of a real-life scientist - John Nash. The acting by Russel Crowe was flawless.

Collection ID 473
Director: John Moore
Starring: Owen Wilson, Gene Hackman, Gabriel Macht, Charles Malik Whitfield, David Keith
Genre: Action
Studio: Twentieth Century Fox   Release date: 2001   Rated: PG-13
Language (Country): English, Spanish (USA)
Summary: A Navy navigator is shot down over enemy territory and is ruthlessly pursued by a secret police enforcer and the opposing troops. Meanwhile his commanding officer goes against orders in an attempt to rescue him.
My Rating:
My Review: I liked this movie. Some people need to be reminded that this is a movie, not a documentary or news footage. While some of the action sequences were unbelievable (100,000 rounds fired at Owen Wilson, but not one hit him), they were exciting. The acting was good, the costumes, sets, and locations were alive with realism. Some day they'll invent fake snow that looks real. After photographing war crime activities, a US Navy pilot (actually two pilots) is shot down over Bosnia-Herzegovina. He must evade and escape in order to survive the ordeal. With the feel of 'based on actual events', this movie entertains, thrills, and makes you think. A great action flick.

Director: Spike Jonze
Starring: John Cusack, Cameron Diaz, Ned Bellamy, Eric Weinstein, Madison Lanc
Genre: Comedy
Studio: Gramercy Pictures   Release date: 1999   Rated: R
Language (Country): English (USA)
Summary: Craig, a puppeteer, takes a filing job in a low-ceilinged office in Manhattan. Although married to the slightly askew Lotte, he hits on a colleague, the sexually frank Maxine. She's bored but snaps awake when he finds a portal leading inside John Malkovich: for 15 minutes you see, hear, and feel whatever JM is doing, then you fall out by the New Jersey Turnpike. Maxine makes it commercial, selling trips for $200; also, she's more interested in Lotte than in Craig, but only when Lotte is inside JM. JM finds out what's going on and tries to stop it, but Craig sees the portal as his road to Maxine and to success as a puppeteer. Meanwhile, Lotte discovers others interested in the portal.
My Rating:
My Review: Wow! It's been quite some time since I've seen this movie, and I have to say - Amazing! A truly original story. A twisted journey into an alternate universe. The story is bizarre all right - A down on his luck Puppeteer (played by John Cusack) is hired by a firm between the 7th and 8th floors of an office building. While he's attempting to make friends, he finds a hidden portal into John Malkovich's (played by John Malkovich) mind. Yes you heard me right, and for $200.00, you too can 'Be' John Malkovich! Starring John Cusack, Cameron Diaz, Catherine Keener, John Malkovich, Mary Kay Place, Orson Bean, Charlie Sheen and others. This movie was written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Spike Jonze. I need to look for more work from these two. In this twisted movie, the characters are normal people, but the writing and direction manages to make them seem extraordinary. The subtle emphasis on seemingly mundane aspects of the film creates a strange but wonderful feeling throughout. Intentionally disorienting and creepy. The oddball nature of this movie made me laugh throughout. A surreal snapshot of alternate reality, a head trip of existential proportions. It will leave you smiling, happy and confused. Excellent casting, acting, directing, writing, camera work, music. I loved it.
