Starring: Dennis Quaid, Max von Sydow, Christopher Plummer, Eddie Albert, Kate Capshaw
Genre: Adventure
Studio: Zupnik-Curtis Enterprises   Release date: 1984   Rated:
Language (Country): English (USA)
Summary: A government funded project looks into using psychics to enter people's dreams, with some mechanical help. When a subject dies in his sleep from a heart attack Alex Gardner becomes suspicious that another of the psychics is killing people in the dreams somehow and that is causing them to die in real life. He must find a way to stop the abuse of the power to enter dreams.
My Rating:
My Review: A fantastic premise, the story is amazing. A government funded research project where 'psychonauts' are trained to enter other people's dreams. Dennis Quaid plays Alex Gardner (one of the gifted psychonauts), Max von Sydow plays Dr. Paul Novotny (the all so serious project leader), Kate Capshaw plays Dr. Jane DeVries (the sexy female doctor), David Patrick Kelly plays Tommy Ray Glatman (the other 'psychonaut' - head lab rat). The cast was great. The 80s special effects… Well, the 80s were a trying time for special effects. The stop motion animation was pretty good, but it wasn't well integrated into the visual effects. The music was typical 80s horror flick style, but the story was still the star of this movie. What's haunting the President's dreams? Who's really in charge of this research project? What is the real goal of this dream exploration project? The drama was excellent. The ending sequences awesome. I give it a 4 out of 5.

Summary: The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One - a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called "Judges" who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge - a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of "Slo-Mo" experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed. During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson, a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture - a 200 storey vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan's inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound's ...
My Rating:
My Review: Screenplay by Alex Garland (based on characters by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra (writer and artist of the Judge Dredd comics)). Directed by Pete Travis. Starring Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey and others. The opening lines of the movie (spoken by Judge Dredd (played by Karl Urban)): "America is an irradiated wasteland. Within it lies a city. Outside the boundary walls, a desert. A cursed earth. Inside the walls, a cursed city, stretching from Boston to Washington D.C. An unbroken concrete landscape. 800 million people living in the ruin of the old world and the mega structures of the new one. Mega blocks. Mega highways. Mega City One. Convulsing. Choking. Breaking under its own weight. Citizens in fear of the street. The Gun. The Gang. Only one thing fighting for order in the chaos: the men and women of the Hall of Justice. Juries. Executioners. Judges." This quote sets the stage for an excellent sci-fi, action movie. I first read the Judge Dredd comics back in the late 70s. I remember reading the debut 2000AD Comic featuring Judge Dredd. I read the comic throgh the late 70s into the early 80s. It's a character and story I'm familiar with. I own a copy of Judge Dredd (with Sylvester Stalone) and now Dredd (with Karl Urban). In this movie, Judge Dredd and his trainee partner Anderson (played by Olivia Thirlby). Together they are tasked with taking down Ma-Ma (Played by Lena Headey) and her cronies. Ma-Ma is the leader of the gang responsible for the reality-altering drug, Slo-Mo. The dystopian future setting is one of my favorites. The visual effects were excellent. I was also quite pleased with the casting. Karl Urban made an excellent Judge Dredd. Lena Hedey played a really good villain. The Anderson character was well portrayed by Thirlby, acting as a counter or foil to Dredd's overbearing fatalism. Although the flavor of this Judge Dredd is different than the movie starring Sylvester Stalone, I like both. I give this movie a 5 out of 5.

My Rating:
My Review: My second Filmmovement.com movie. Produced in Hong-Kong, this is something of a propaganda movie. A movie about a young man who's deported from the U.S. He had a child while he was there, and now he's unhappy back home in China. His son returns to China and is staying with his mother's parents. He tries to see the boy, but the grandparents do their best to keep him away. Slow moving during the first half of the movie, the pace doesn't pick up until the Er Di (Little (or Younger) Brother) learns that his son has been brought to China. The acting was pretty good, but the main characters melancholy mood was a bit too much. It's an interesting film, a human drama about traditional Chinese values and the desires of its younger generation. A complicated thing. Well done, but less than satisfying.

The movie has a brilliant cast, and fantastic characters (Danny DeVito (Chief Wyatt Rash), Bette Midler (Mona Dearly), Neve Campbell (Ellen Rash), Jamie Lee Curtis (Rona Mace), Casey Affleck (Boby Calzone), and more. Director: Peter Farrelly
Starring: Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Lauren Holly, Mike Starr, Charles Rocket
Genre: Comedy
Studio: New Line Cinema   Release date: 1994   Rated: PG-13
Language (Country): English, French (USA)
Summary: The cross-country adventures of two good-hearted but incredibly stupid friends.
My Rating:
My Review: Dumb & Dumber starring Jim Carrey (playing Lloyd Christmas) and Jeff Daniels (playing Harry Dunne) is one of the few Farrelly brother movies that I can tolerate. Their penchant for making fun of people with disabilities annoys and sometimes disgusts me. In this case, it's so obvious that these two characters are just that - 'Characters' - that no one could imagine that there might be real people with their particular 'disabilities'. Carrey and Daniels work perfectly together. Their timing and chemistry is spot on. The only other actor to even come close to their performance is Mike Starr playing "Joe 'Mental' Mentaliano". The movie is full of scatological, juvenile, crude humor and slapstick. The humor is very physical and totally 'Stupid'. There are people who can't stand this movie, they consider it too stupid for them to watch… Really? That's sad. If you can't learn to laugh at life you're in a really sad situation. I agree that we shouldn't laugh at people with disabilities, but Lloyd and Harry are clearly not based on 'real' people. They're mockeries of our own ideas regarding 'Smart' and 'Stupid'. The story - Two dimwits get involved in a high stakes kidnapping scheme when Lloyd (played by Jim Carrey) tries to do a good deed by returning a lost briefcase to Mary Swanson (played by Lauren Holly). In order to return the briefcase, Lloyd and Harry have to embark on a cross-country journey from Providence, RI to Aspen, CO. The road trip buddy comedy shines with comedic genius in the performances by Carrey and Daniels. They are simply outstanding in their roles. They actually make these incredibly stupid characters believable; well, somewhat believable. The story itself is a throw away plot that couldn't hold any water without these two masters at the helm. I give the movie a 5 out of 5.
